When you browse around the net, you came across a “pipe humidor” sooner or later. And many pipe smokers wonder: “Do I need such a thing?”
Short answer: NO, you don’t.
Long answer: maybe…. ;-)
There are two potential uses for a humidor:
- keep your pipes in ready-to-smoke prime condition by giving them the optimum moisture and temperature while “resting”
- keep your pipe tobacco fresh an yummy
I have been smoking pipes for well over 25 years now, and have not felt the need for a humidor, neither for my pipes, nor for my tobacco.
But of course that is a matter of taste and how intense your “addiction” is…
And, admitted: a nicely built wooden humidor just looks great in your living room… ;-)
I’d say it’s the same thing as with wine: from a certain price tag upwards you do not taste any difference any more, unless you are very eager to taste a difference or you are a really trained gourmet.
Same here: if I take the usual precautions with my tobacco, and in case it became a bit dry just put it on the window sill (outside) during a cold night with lots of dew, things are fine for me. My pipes never got any cracks or other problems from a lack of humidity. And a pipe that you do not smoke regularly does not taste very well anyways, no matter how you store it…
So: in case you got a lot of extra cash and have a certain inclination to give your pipe smoking habit more weight and distinction: go ahead and buy a humidor!
All others: don’t worry. Won’t harm you or your pipes NOT to have a pipe humidor at home… ;-)
